The History of the Loudoun Basketball Charity Classic

Faced with the end of the long-running Hussa Memorial Tournament during the 2013-2014 season, CLBL evaluated a number of options to provide our players - and those from the other leagues in Loudoun County - a fun and challenging all-star experience.  We approached Ashburn Youth Basketball League with the idea to collaboratively host an All-Star event that would benefit a Loudoun County charity (or charities).  Together, with the help of Loudoun Sports Alliance (LSA), we launched what would become an annual event - the Loudoun Charity Basketball Classic (LBCC).  With teams participating from CLBL, AYBL, and Western Loudoun (WLBL) the first year, together we raised $10,000 in support of Gabriella Miller's Smashing Walnuts Foundation.  In our second season, we raised $17,000 for Kids NOW Network and Team Mathias.  After a modified shootout-style event in 2016 necessitated by frequent wintry weather that year - which nevertheless still managed to raise close to $10,000 for Team Iliana & Gina - the 4th Annual LBCC was played in 2017, benefiting Coaches vs Cancer, Kicking it With Lily, and Backpack Buddies.  The 5th Annual LBCC was played in 2018, benefiting the Ryan Bartell Foundation.  The 6th Annual LBCC was played in 2019, benefiting Mobile Hope of Loudoun.

The Charity Classic was paused in its original incarnation as our community and the rest of the world wrestled with the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath ... but we restarted the tournament after the 2023-2024 season.  The 2025 Loudoun Basketball Charity Classic will benefit the Rocky Cares Foundation, with teams from Ashburn Youth Basketball League, Dulles Youth Sports Basketball, Eastern Loudoun Basketball League, Seneca Ridge River Bend Basketball League, and Western Loudoun Basketball League, in addition to the CLBL entrants.

About The Rocky Cares Foundation

The Rocky Cares Foundation is a nonprofit organization created in memory of Rocky Elardo, a bright, beautiful, and brave young woman who lost her battle to Ewing's sarcoma in February 2024. Rocky Cares aims to honor Rocky's life and legacy by raising awareness and funding to support Ewing sarcoma research for a cure; providing an annual scholarship to senior(s) at Heritage High School that embody Rocky's qualities of intelligence, athleticism, and kindness; and by spreading Rocky's sunshine throughout the community.
